Corruption sure can buy you a lot of pretty things. Serving as Liberia’s president from 1980 to 1986, Samuel Doe’s stint in office was marked with dogged repression and fraud. In spite of this, Doe’s corruption was supported by the United States government as a foil to Soviet expansion in Africa throughout the Cold War. All of that came to a close in 1990 when Doe was assassinated.
