Despite occurring within Ukrainian borders, the effects of nuclear destruction know no limits. The 1986 disaster tore through western parts of the USSR and Europe, and their effects are still in the process of understanding. Over 25 years later, exposure to radioactive iodine isotopes is still being linked to thyroid cancers diagnosed among those within the affected Chernobyl area.
