“Being Chinese, I was worried...I would be targeted as well.”
An Asian man was verbally and then physically assaulted by an old white man while on a Bay Area subway train.
KRON4 news reported that a viral video going around the internet depicts an older white man yelling racial slurs and hitting an Asian man while on a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train headed to Fremont, Calif.
At around 10 p.m. this Monday, the assailant entered the southbound BART train at the Coliseum station.
He quickly began verbally berating the Asian man sitting down, repeatedly calling him “n***er” and a “Chinese n***er.”
The passenger kept his composure, referring to the belligerent man as “sir.”
Another white man seated alongside the victim of this racist abuse left his seat to move to the back of the train during this racist tirade. The old man then hits him twice, saying “I hate you Chinese.”
At that point, the victim got out of his seat and confronted the man, who attempted to fight him.
A female passenger then placed herself between the two men, telling the victim that it is “not worth it” to get into a physical fight with the old man.
Several passengers reiterated this message before the video ended. The alleged aggressor got off the train at the Union City station a couple of seconds after the end of the video.
“You know this situation, you never expect to happen,” said Wiseley Wu, who recorded the viral video. “I just didn’t know what to do at the time. So, by posting it, I hope people will learn from it and do a better job than me.”
“Being Chinese, I was worried…I would be targeted as well,” Wu said.
Riders told KRON4 that unfortunately, they see things like this all the time while on BART trains.
Only a year ago, a similar video surfaced showing a racist man berating an Asian rider with racial slurs.
They hope that increased police presence on the trains may limit the number of these incidents.
