The Science Behind Fall Colors

Believe it or not, the rich, jewel-toned hues we so love are always lying within the leaves, albeit underneath the color green. It’s when chlorophyll stops being produced at the end of the summer that these pigments - known as carotenoids and anthocyanins – are finally allowed to shine through. Why? It just doesn't make sense for a tree to expend a lot of energy on pigments meant to capture light energy when said light — given the fact that it's winter — is already in short supply.
