South Korea Creates Ice Cream Bar Designed To Cure Hangovers

South Korea has come up with a literally sweet hangover cure: An ice cream bar scientifically designed to counteract the after-effects of a night of heavy drinking.

The grapefruit-flavored sweet, called Gyeondyo-bar (or “hang in there” in English), is the first ice cream bar specifically marketed for hangovers.

The ice cream is just the latest product among a spate of hangover-abating inventions in South Korea. According to Reuters, hangover related products are a booming industry in South Korea, raking in $126 million a year. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, as South Korea is the highest-drinking country per capita in Asia.

As silly as it may sound, the Gyeondyo-bar might actually live up to the hype. It contains 0.7 percent raisin tree fruit juice, a hangover remedy that goes back to the 17th century.

More recently, a study from the Journal of Neuroscience found that this type of fruit juice does actually reduce the effects of intoxication — in rats. As for humans, the medical community definitely concluded there is no such thing as a miracle hangover cure.

Either way, Americans will have to wait to test it out for themselves — there are currently no plans to sell the ice cream stateside. In the meantime, Gatorade and Netflix will just have to do.
