In 2013, Time Magazine sent its photographers everywhere from Afghanistan to Russia to Venezuela to the Central African Republic with one goal in mind: cover the most important stories of the day in the most easily understood–and therefore compelling–way possible. The results, as you might imagine, were pretty incredible. And thanks to the editors at Time, they’ve created a 24-photo spread to highlight the year’s most critical events in pictorial form.

A Stunning Christmas Ice Storm

While absolutely gorgeous for us non-affected observers, the implications of this week’s ice storms were great. On Sunday, a massive ice storm swept through the Midwest and parts of Canada, taking with it trees, infrastructure and, most importantly, power. As of Monday, over 500,000 people were without power as temperatures remained below freezing. The Atlantic has a gorgeous–yet quite chilly looking–spread of the aftermath in Ontario and Quebec.
