The World’s Most Obscure Sports: Extreme Ironing

Yes, it is in fact a thing: according to the Extreme Ironing Bureau based in England, extreme ironing is “the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt.” It is believed to have been invented in 1997 by Phil Shaw, who decided one day to combine his need to iron with his desire to rock climb.

Extreme ironing is now a phenomenon throughout the world and has taken place in bizarre locations that include mountains and on the tops of bronze statues. Perhaps more impressively, some have even ironed while in a canoe and bungee jumping.
