One Woman’s Inspirational Adjustment To Facial Transplant Surgery

In 2007, Carmen Tarleton’s life was irrevocably changed. Her estranged husband broke into her home, pouring industrial-strength lye all over her body. As a result, burns occupied 80% of her body and Tarleton was declared legally blind. This past year, Tarleton underwent a facial transplant surgery, and while it will take time for her nerves to become one with her donor face, she has not let that serve as a barrier to feeling. Rather, it is in the absence of more traditional expression mechanisms that Tarleton, as she states in the video, has truly been able to show her core.
