The three keepers of this isolated lighthouse in Scotland's Outer Hebrides islands suddenly disappeared in December 1900 — and to this day, their fate remains shrouded in mystery.
On December 18, 1900, a ship arriving in Leith, Scotland, reported something unusual. It had sailed past the Flannan Isles, in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, and noticed that the Eilean Mòr Lighthouse had gone dark. Three men were supposed to be manning the lighthouse, located 80 miles from the mainland, but the light had gone out.
In fact, no one had seen the three men manning the lighthouse — James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald McArthur — since December 7th, when a lighthouse administrator had visited the island. At that point, everything seemed to be in working order. Something had clearly happened in the week since, so a ship swiftly sailed to the Flannan Isles lighthouse to investigate.

The ship, the Hesperus, was a lighthouse relief ship and well-accustomed to dealing with lighthouses and their keepers. But it ran into problems almost immediately.
While trying to reach the Eilean Mòr lighthouse, it was battered by violent storms. The Hesperus wasn’t able to get close to the lighthouse until December 26th. The lighthouse was still dark — and though the ship blew its whistle and fired a flare, there was no answer from the lonely structure.
With the specter of tragedy hanging heavy over the Hesperus, a lone man, a lighthouse relief keeper named Joseph Moore, mounted the 160 steps from the water’s edge up into the Eilean Mòr lighthouse, then climbed up inside the 75-foot-high tower that loomed over the sea. Inside, Moore found no signs of life, aside from a starving canary sitting on its perch. The lighthouse keepers were nowhere to be found.

So what happened to the keepers of the Flannan Isles lighthouse? An investigation turned up a handful of clues, but the fate of the men ultimately remained a mystery. Meanwhile, the story surrounding their disappearance has generated continued interest over the years, causing the story to snowball with new — and sometimes false — details with each retelling.
This is the true story of the Flannan Isles Mystery, from the initial investigation into the disappearance of the three lighthouse keepers at Eilean Mòr, to the theories about their fates that have developed since.
