Being a mobster is dangerous, but evidently, so is being a mob wife.

Alice Granville was mostly known as an actress, though there is shockingly little information on her available. In fact, most results yield little more than a set of two images, each published by the New York Daily News, which show Granville displaying two bullet wounds on her arm. But it is the circumstances surrounding those wounds that really make the photo stand out.

Granville was married to a mobster named Pete Donahue. Donahue was one of notorious gangster Dutch Schultz’s lieutenants. He was a hitman who, it turned out, was a little bit too trigger-happy.

So, in a weird display of his love, Donahue shot Granville twice in her arm. The photograph’s original caption reads: “Blond actress Alice Granville says Pete Donahue, Dutch Schultz lieutenant, put these bullet holes in her arm at night club party to prove affection.” How, exactly, putting two bullet holes in your partner shows affection is beyond normal comprehension — but sometimes love is complicated.
