The Terrifying Game ‘Amnesia: The Dark Descent’

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a survival horror video game released by the developer Frictional Games in September 2010. It is set in Brennenburg Castle in Prussia in the early 19th century and follows a man named Daniel who is suffering from memory loss.
As Daniel, players must navigate clues and puzzles inside the castle while searching for its baron. Daniel also has a sanity meter that can be depleted by staying in the dark for long periods of time or looking at the monsters that roam through the castle. If his sanity level falls too low, Daniel begins experiencing hallucinations, attracts more monsters, and temporarily loses mobility.
Upon its release, Amnesia earned critical acclaim and two awards from the Independent Games Festival. The Washington Post even dubbed it one of the most “influential games of the decade.” It gained more traction in the public eye when famed YouTuber PewDiePie filmed a series of himself playing the game, amassing millions of views per video.
Critics applauded the excellent pacing and suspense of Amnesia, with many calling it the scariest horror game they’d ever played.
