The Hottest Places On Earth: Mitribah, Kuwait

Temperatures may be hot in Australia, but they’re even hotter in Kuwait, one of the hottest places in the world. The weather station of Mitribah in the northwest of the country recorded a record temperature of 129 degrees Fahrenheit on July 21, 2016.

That makes Mitribah the hottest place in Kuwait — and in its region of Asia.

The Mitribah, Kuwait temperature is now accepted by the WMO [the World Meteorological Organization] as the highest temperature ever recorded for the continental region of Asia,” the WMO said in a statement after it verified the temperature.

Mitribah is a weather station, not a town. In fact, The Guardian reported in 2016 that its exact location is somewhat unclear, though it appears to be close to an American army base called Camp Buehring. The landscape, dotted with military firing ranges and abandoned vehicles, is largely uninhabited, though Bedouin shepherds and camel herders are known to live in the area.

But the record it set in 2016 is indicative of scorching temperatures across the country as a whole. Kuwait’s hot season, which lasts from from May until September, has an average daily temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures in July can soar even higher — 114 degrees — making this one of the hottest places on Earth.
