Srikesh Kumar: The Man Who Was Found Alive In A Morgue, Only To Die Five Days Later
After he was struck by a motorcycle in Moradabad, India, in 2021, Srikesh Kumar arrived at a private health facility in critical condition. Medical staff soon pronounced the man dead and placed his body in a morgue freezer until his family could come by to identify the remains.
But as Newsweek reported, the staff made a serious mistake.
When his family arrived six hours later with the police, his sister-in-law, Madhu Bala, rested her hand on his cheek and noticed that he felt warm. She also noticed another peculiarity — the dead man was breathing.
“He’s not at all dead, in fact far from it,” she said. “How did this happen? Look, he wants to say something, he is breathing.”
As Dr. Rajendra Kumar, the hospital’s medical superintendent, explained it: “The emergency medical officer examined him. He did not find any signs of life and hence declared him dead.”
The doctor also called Srikesh Kumar’s recovery “a miracle.” The man’s family, however, saw it as a massive failure on the hospital’s end — one that could have actually cost Srikesh Kumar his life.
And unfortunately, his miraculous recovery didn’t last long. Per Complex, the head injury he’d sustained in the accident ultimately put him into a coma. After a five-day battle in the hospital, he died — for real, this time.
“He wanted to live,” his brother, Satyanand Gautam, said after the ordeal. “He showed signs of recovery as he used to respond whenever we called his name. His vitals were normal. However, he had a clot in his brain… We will take action against everyone responsible for his death.”
