‘Dead Space’: A Cult Horror Game In The Cosmos

Dead Space, released by Electronic Arts in 2008, is another scary video game that takes place in outer space. The story follows 26th-century engineer Isaac Clarke as he attempts to uncover what happened to the USG Ishimura, a spaceship that has gone radio silent.
On the ship, Clarke discovers that it has been taken over by mutated undead humans. Players must fight these creatures while uncovering the mystery of a cult-like group attempting to destroy humanity.
Inspired by Resident Evil 4, the game is played in a third-person perspective. It has been praised for its creepy atmosphere that feels as if the undead could pounce at any time.
“Call it science fiction survival horror,” a 2023 review on IGN reads, “but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that’s tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump.”
Commercially, the game did not do as well as expected, but it did win several awards. Two sequels and multiple spin-offs were created, and a remake of the original game was released in 2023.
