Located at the foot of the Pyrenees in southern France, the tiny village is being touted as the only place that will survive the Armageddon. Recently, the little population of 187 was inundated by “erotics” who are preparing to use the site as a refuge from the end date of the universe (according to the Mayan calendar), December 21, 2012. But why exactly are these people flocking to harmless little Bugurach?

Certain New Age devotees are convinced that the mountain of Bugarach is a sacred place that houses aliens in a cavity beneath the rock. They believe that when the apocalypse occurs, these aliens will leave their cavity and perhaps select a few humans to take along. While this may sound bizarre, Bugarach has actually been a site of various alien stories.

People have been visiting the area for a decade in search of alien life and there have been UFO sightings by a local, who attested to hearing humming noises of spacecrafts under the mountain.

Locals claim that planes don’t fly over the peak because of magnetic forces, and a spaceship shaped cloud sometimes hangs over the top. Bugarach even inspired Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Naturally, believers are clinging to the hope of escaping the world’s end with these alien guests like below:

New Age fanatics believe that the Armageddon will mean spiritual cleansing, with the rebirth of a new spiritual world. The magnetic energy of the Bugarach peak, with its supposed alien life form, is said to be the perfect location to help usher in this new era. The Mayor and the local residents aren’t happy though, with the Mayor even threatening to seal off the village from visitors.
