The “Ninja” Who Took On The U.S. Army

Kern County Sheriff’s OfficeThe assailant only dropped his sword after police tased him.
In the early morning hours of September 18, 2021, a man “wearing full ninja garb” and carrying a katana sword approached a staff sergeant on duty at a remote U.S. Army special operations unit. The incident happened at the Inyokern Airport in Kern County, north of Los Angeles.
The mysterious man first asked the sergeant a strange question: “Do you know who I am?” When the sergeant said he didn’t, the man then asked, “Do you know where my family is?” Shortly after the sergeant responded that he didn’t, the man attacked him with a katana sword.
Though injured, the sergeant was luckily able to flee. He soon jumped a fence to seek shelter in a building with other members of his company.
In response, the man kicked and punched the doors and windows of the building, at one point throwing a rock through a window and hitting a captain in the head. Though the members of the unit called 911 right away, it took over 20 minutes before they finally got some help from the police.
The suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Gino Rivera, was eventually located by the cops. He was then tased and arrested.
Rivera was arrested “for attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon, brandishing a weapon with the intent to resist or prevent an arrest,” among other criminal charges.
As for the injured sergeant and captain, they both promptly received stitches for their wounds and thankfully made a speedy recovery.
