In 2018, temperatures in Ouargla, Algeria soared to a record-breaking 124 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the city’s official record, though an even higher — though disputed — temperature of 128 degrees was recorded in 1984. Either way, this safely puts Ouargla among the hottest places in the world.

A city located in the Sahara Desert, Ouargla stays fairly hot all year round. During its hottest season, from June until September, temperatures usually stay around 100 degrees. July is the hottest month, with temperatures increasing to around 108 degrees.

In the winter, however, low temperatures can fall into the 40s.

Ouargla is known for more than its temperature and desert conditions, however. The Algerian city, located in the north of the country, is home to more than 100,000 people, as well as the University of Ouargla.

It also used to draw tourists seeking “sand roses,” or gypsum crystal clusters, which could be found at souks, or open-air marketplaces.

Today, Ouargla is mostly known for its oil. But it also has the distinction of being one of the hottest places in Africa.
