Interesting Events: Amelia Earhart’s Disappearance
Amelia Earhart was a celebrated American aviator, a pioneer in her field, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and a renowned author who wrote vividly about her flying experiences. And her 1937 disappearance and subsequent death remain a hotly-debated mystery to this day.
Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean after an attempted round-the-world flight. Her last radio activity was received on June 2, 1937, after which she completely lost touch with base. A rescue mission led by the US Navy and Coast Guard soon ensued.
Despite the costly and lengthy search (which also included a self-funded mission by Earhart’s husband, George Putnam), no wreckage or evidence of Earhart was ever found.
She was declared legally dead two years later, but theories about her disappearance persist to this date. They range from the logical (that her plane ran out of fuel) to the absurd (that she was a CIA agent who was captured by Japanese forces).
