An admitted Holocaust denier is the presumptive nominee for an Illinois congressional seat.

Talk about slim competition. Arthur Jones is a Holocaust denier and a former leader of the American Nazi Party. He is also the presumptive Republican nominee for Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District Election. The deadline to register as a candidate for the GOP primary was early December of 2017. And since nobody else registered, that left Jones unopposed, all but guaranteeing him the spot.

The District’s voting history leans heavily in the Democratic direction and it’s predicted that Jones doesn’t have a chance of winning. Still, the fact that his name will even appear on the voting ballot skews a bit towards terrifying.

What’s also terrifying: Jones’ reputation as a Holocaust denier isn’t political smear or based on unfounded allegations. In an interview on CNN with Alisyn Camerota, Jones said, “Yes, I deny the Holocaust.” He continued, “It’s an extortion racket. . . . It is nothing but an international extortion racket by the Jews to bleed, blackmail, extort and terrorize their enemies.”

In the past, he’s also stated that white people are more intelligent than black people.

It didn’t take a lot of digging to uncover Jones’ viewpoints. Like most political candidates, Jones has a campaign website outlining his agenda and political policies. The search menu at the top of his website includes standard tabs, such as “Issues,” “About Art Jones,” and “Donate.” Oh yeah, then there’s “Hate Speech?” and “Holocaust?” (Question marks included.)

Some of the key issues he highlights are making English the official language, denying amnesty for illegal aliens, and getting rid of sanctuary cities. When it comes to women and gay rights, he is succedent in summarizing his views: “Pro-Life – Yes; Homosexual Agenda – NO!”

The “Holocaust?” section is composed of several scanned in documents, the first one being a pamphlet titled “THE HOLOCAUST RACKET.” Along with several news clippings, there’s also an uploaded pamphlet titled, “The Ko$her Food Scam.” In the top right corner of his campaign site is a link to his personal blog, so that he can have an outlet that allows him to really share his thoughts.

The GOP is blaming the media for covering Jones. The National Republican Congressional Committee says that the media should simply ignore him. A statement from NRCC spokesman Jesse Hunt says, “This man is equal parts disgusting and delusional.”

There are two Democrats running, Daniel Lipinski and Marie Newman, as well as an independent, Mat Tomkowiak. Though Jones ran congressional campaigns in 1998, 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2016, the 2018 campaign will be the first one in which he is an actual option on the ballot.

Even though the deadline to run passed, the GOP had 45 days to find a write-in candidate. And even if any republic candidate doesn’t stand a chance in this district, for the sake of political PR at least, it may have made sense for the party to find someone who wasn’t an openly racist Nazi.

Now, why don’t you take a look at these heartbreaking images from inside the Jewish ghettos, then read about how one woman saved 2,500 Jewish children during the Holocaust.
