Our pre-existing notions on matters of religion, sexuality, and politics tend to make us read only the articles that agree with our views.

Often our preconceived notions involve a lot of negativity about an opposing faction of people. If we believe certain groups are bad, we love hearing opinions that agree with us. Luckily, on the internet, there is no shortage of people willing to speak such hatred.

In addition, we also tend toward negativity bias, meaning that we give more attention to the negative particulars than the positive ones. Good news thus doesn’t have much of a chance when locked in a battle with bad news.
