A $1.5 Million Prototype Floating Home Toppled Into The Water At Its Unveiling Ceremony

The Panama-based company Ocean Builders wants to help humanity move from the land to the sea, and their flagship product, the SeaPod, seemed poised to do so.
But despite impressive design and innovative technology, it seems as if the dream must be put on hold a bit longer while Ocean Builders irons out the kinks — or, at the very least, makes a SeaPod prototype that doesn’t topple over into the water.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened when the company unveiled a $1.5 million prototype of its futuristic luxury home back in September in front of a live audience that included Panama’s president, Laurentino Cortizo.
Luckily, no one was hurt during the incident, and Ocean Builders quickly identified the problem: a bilge pump malfunction that threw off the balance of a steel spar, causing the prototype to flood.
Initial reports also alleged that the SeaPod model had “crashed,” which the company refuted along with claims that it sank into the ocean. Still, if you’re thinking about purchasing a home that’s floating out in the middle of the sea, a pump malfunction causing it to tip over may be a deal-breaker.
