Although he was already married to Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn’s charm made her a prime target for King Henry VIII’s affection. His infatuation could not be shaken and he set out to defy the Catholic Church’s policy against divorce so that he could legally sever his relationship with Catherine and marry Boleyn instead.

Boleyn, who never intended to become a mistress to King Henry VIII and never meant to be the object of a kingdom’s scorn, made history when the King of England split his kingdom to make her his queen.

Henry VIII formed the Church of England, and made himself its head. Meanwhile, Roman Catholics of the time despised the new queen and pledged their continued loyalty to Catherine of Aragon.
