Anthony Bourdain’s Fatal Struggle With Depression

Anthony Bourdain was the “original rock star” of the culinary world. He made a name for himself by exposing the seedy underbelly of the restaurant industry and proceeded to differentiate himself from other “celebrity chefs” by expanding his horizons beyond just making tasty food.
His show Parts Unknown proved to be a huge success, but he was still haunted by experiences from early in his career.
When he first entered the restaurant industry, Bourdain developed a heroin addiction. Even once he got clean, he struggled with his mental health. He often talked about death and wondered out loud how he would die. He shared thoughts about how he would kill himself if he ever decided to do so.
In one of his last interviews, he said he was going to “die in the saddle.”
This statement ended up being true, as on June 8, 2018, while filming an episode of Parts Unknown, Bourdain was found dead in his room at Le Chambard Hotel in Kaysersberg-Vignoble, France.
He was 61 years old, and he had hung himself with the belt from his hotel bathrobe.
His friend, Éric Ripert, found his body after growing concerned when Bourdain failed to show up at dinner the night before and then breakfast the morning of.
Later, he said, “Anthony was a dear friend. He was an exceptional human being, so inspiring and generous. One of the great storytellers of our time who connected with so many. I wish him peace. My love and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones.”
Experts stated that they believed Anthony Bourdain’s suicide was an impulsive act, but on an earlier episode of his show, Bourdain had spoken to a psychotherapist and opened up about his depression. He said he wanted to be happier.
