Does your “neutral” look have others heading for the hills? Scientists say that you don’t just have a bad attitude — indeed, “resting bitch face” (RBF) is real.

According to a 2015 study conducted by software company Noldus Information Technology, people with RBF have twice “the emotionality expressed” in a neutral expression than their non-RBF peers, and that most of that emotion expressed is contempt.

How’d they do it? The researchers would choose a “neutral-looking image of a person,” CNN wrote, and run it through a FaceReader software. The software then reads the face and “gives a percentage of underlying emotions it’s picking up.” A regular face, CNN notes, will register as 97 percent neutral, with the remaining 3 percent expressing an underlying emotion. Those with RBF — such as Kanye West, Kristen Stewart and Anna Kendrick, according to the researchers — register as approximately 94 percent neutral, with trace emotions registering as high as 6 percent.
