632 C.E.: The Prophet Muhammad Dies
Prophet Muhammad dies in Medina, Saudi Arabia, at the age of 62. The founder of Islam and the man behind the religion’s holy text, the Qurʾān, Muhammad is regarded by Muslims as God’s final prophet. Today, almost 2 billion Muslims worldwide follow the path set forth by Muhammad.
1867: Frank Lloyd Wright Is Born
Frank Lloyd Wright is born in Richland Center, Wisconsin. One of America’s preeminent 20th-century architects, Wright designed both “Prairie Style” residential homes as well as structures like the Guggenheim Museum. In all, he designed some 800 buildings, of which about 380 were actually built.
1874: Apache Chief Cochise Dies
Cochise dies on the Chiricahua Apache Reservation in present-day Arizona. An Apache chief, Cochise spent most of his life fighting the U.S. Army after he and others were accused of kidnapping a ranch hand’s young son. After a decade of resistance, he negotiated a treaty and retired to a reservation.
1924: George Mallory Is Seen Alive For The Last Time
British explorer George Mallory is seen alive for the last time as he and his climbing partner, Sandy Irvine, attempt to summit Mount Everest. Mallory’s body was found in 1999; Irving’s partial remains were discovered in 2024.
1972: The “Napalm Girl” Photo Is Taken
AP photographer Nick Ut captures a photo of nine-year-old Phan Thị Kim Phúc in Trảng Bàng, Vietnam, after she was burned by napalm during an assault. Ut’s photo of the screaming, naked girl — soon dubbed the “Napalm girl” — shocked readers when it appeared in newspapers. Ultimately, Phúc survived the Vietnam War and later became an advocate for peace.
2018: Anthony
DiesAnthony Bourdain dies by suicide at a hotel in Kaysersberg-Vignoble, France, at the age of 61. A chef who became famous through his writing on the culinary “underworld,” Bourdain also hosted the popular travel show Parts Unknown. All the while, he struggled with mental health issues that ultimately led to his tragic end.
