Family Life In A Newly Independent Ukraine

In December 1991, a 26-year-old Adam Hinton went to live with the Sklai family in Donetsk, Ukraine. The country had gained independence from the Soviet Union only four months earlier. Over the course of three years, he photographed the family, trying to catch the mood of optimism that had swept through the country.
The more time he spent there, though, the more he realized that behind his photographs, the Ukrainian people were frustrated by a lagging economy and an ineffective government.
“It was almost like Ukraine stayed Soviet. So really, I got a look into Soviet life. It felt more like the end of the Soviet era than the beginning of a new Ukranian one,” Hinton told Slate.
You can see more of Hinton’s deceptively cheerful black and white photos at Slate.
